    The arrival

    Friday 16

    9.25 am

    [Br] [Br]

Stina is feeling relaxed and confident as she takes her first steps into the impressive lobby of the M&R Corporation.[Br] [Br]

The flight from Europe the day before had landed on time and her feet hadn’t even touched the ground before she was welcomed by the Airport Director of Security. He and three other officials had escorted her through the checkpoints and various backways to keep her away from the public areas. She had smiled as they stuttering and blushing produced napkins she could sign for “my kids”, “my little brother” or “my aunt” before she entered the waiting limousine. Their eagerness so endearing that she couldn’t resist finishing each of the autographs with the imprint of a kiss.
    [Br] [Br]
The short drive to the rather exclusive and discrete hotel where she had booked a suite went well and a surprisingly deep sleep had done her a ton of good. The exquisite breakfast – delivered by room service – had lifted her spirits even higher and the little incident with the coffee was only a minor blemish on an otherwise beautiful morning.
    [Br] [Br]
As she walks across the lobby floor accompanied by the distinct sound of her heels, she wonders briefly who else they might be considering for the job. It is hard to know, but the pay is certainly good enough to attract major celebrities, so it is quite possible she is up against tough competition.
    [Br] [Br]
The girl in the reception is busy on the phone. “No, I wouldn’t be too worried about it. I am sure she will be brought back shortly.” She listens to the caller on the other end. “Yes, I’ll make a note about it right away.”
    [Br] [Br]
Waiting for the conversation to end, Stina glances at the fliers on the counter. One is promoting a nearby casino called “the Lacy Place”; another is advertising a vacation to a tropical island. Its brightly colored front page offers a “life changing experience”. The outrageous claim, that a two-week vacation on a tropical island will have that kind of impact on anybody, brings a smile to Stinas lips. “Welcome to America”, she thinks. Then she shakes her head as in wonderment. Everything is always so different over here…
    [Br] [Br]
“You are very welcome, Miss Akane, Have a nice day.” Finishing the call, the receptionist acknowledges Stina with a small gesture of apology. “I’m sorry you have to wait, I’ll be with you in a few moments, but I need to finish this.” She turns her attention towards a large cabinet, produces something that looks like a personal file from one of the drawers and starts leafing through it.[Br] [Br]

Stinas mind begins to drift while she waits for her turn…[Br] [Br]

If somebody had told her ten years ago she would end up as a famous actress, she would have laughed outright and asked, “Don’t you mean actor?” Her name had been Christian back then when he was struggling to get his career underway. He had taken countless dancing, acting and singing lessons through his late teens and joined a small theater company a few days before his twentieth birthday.Br] [Br]

At age 23 he was offered a part as the transgendered Christina in the low-budget movie “The girl next door”. It was a heartwarming story – and it was an instant hit. Loved by the critics and audiences alike it had earned him an Academy Award as best supporting actor.r] [Br]

The sudden fame changed his life profoundly.

He had been crossdressing in secret since his earliest childhood and he was quick to realize the potential of pursuing a career as a female impersonator. He accepted a job as a hostess in a series of public service programs where his part of the show was called “Stinas guide to safety in the home”. The idea was that he (or she), in each of the programs, should demonstrate how to avoid accidents in the home. Something would always go wrong, and she would end up electrocuting herself, slipping on the wet floor or falling from ladders – and every time it would happen in such a way, that her dress was torn, and her underwear exposed.Br] [Br]

“I´m sorry I had to keep you waiting” The receptionist voice yanks Stina back into the present. “How can I help?”
    [Br] [Br]
“Ah…I was hoping you could help me with…” Stina rummages through the contents of her handbag before she produces the invitation “…this! I have a meeting here.”[Br] [Br]

“I see. And who are you supposed to meet?”[Br] [Br]

“Well, that’s the problem. I had a little accident with a spilled cup of coffee this morning…” Stina blushes “…so I am afraid I can’t read the name.”
    [Br] [Br]
“Hmmm… let’s try the computer and see if anything comes up. What was your name again?”[Br] [Br]

    “My name is Stina.”[Br] [Br]

    “…and your last name?”[Br] [Br]

Stina smiles “I think Stina will do. Most people know me by that name.”
    [Br] [Br]
The receptionist looks confused for a moment before the penny drops “Oh my God. It’s you. I mean… wow… you are Stina! I am so sorry.”[] [Br]

“No need to worry. I don’t tend to get recognized with this hair.”

The receptionist laughs nervously “I love your character in “Swords and Sorcery” What happened to your long blond hair?”[Br] [Br]

“You mean as Princess Anya? It’s a wig.”

The buzz of the phone interrupts the receptionists reply as she scrambles to answer the call. “M&R Corporation. How can I make your day better?” She listens for a while and shakes her head: “No, I haven’t heard anything yet, Miss Akane. I´m afraid she won´t be available tonight… Yes, it is most unfortunate…” She makes a note on a piece of paper “I can try that, but I will have to make a few phone calls first… may I call you back a little later?” She finishes the call and looks at Stina with an air of apology. “I´m really sorry to keep you waiting all the time but we seem to have a little emergency on our hands. It shouldn´t take too long, though… There´s a lounging area right over there where you can relax in the meantime – and there´s coffee as well so please help yourself to a cup if you feel like it.”
    [Br] [Br]
Comfortably seated with a fresh cup of coffee Stina sinks back into the past while the receptionists voice gradually becomes more distant.
    [Br] [Br]
She had worked so hard after winning the Oscar, spending all her savings to pursue the dream of a career as Stina. She trained with the best voice and dialect coaches, doubled her ballet and modern dance lessons and attended masterclasses to hone her skills at acting in front of a camera. What little spare time was left in her busy schedule was spent learning other aspects of womanhood. She studied the fashion magazines to learn how to dress, practiced doing her makeup and hair. She gradually unlearned the body language of Christian and replaced it with the graceful movements of an alluring female.[Br] [Br]

She was nearly out of money when she was offered the part as Sabrina in the romantic movie of the same name. It was a veritable blockbuster and she was awarded her second Academy Award for her performance. She hadn’t looked back since.Br] [Br]

The hit series “Swords and Sorcery” which starred her as the scheming Princess Anya alongside co-stars Anthony Hopkins, Jeff Bridges and Hellen Mirren had boosted her fame even further – and at age 29 she had begun travelling the world doing charity work as an ambassador for the UN.Br] [Br]

She was 31 now and have been happy by all accounts but something was slowly changing inside her. It was becoming more and more difficult for her to return to a male identity after work. It just didn’t feel right anymore. The way she thought, talked and carried herself was purely feminine and she noticed that she felt much more relaxed and genuine as Stina than she had ever done as Christian.
    [Br] [Br]
Stina realizes with a start that her coffee has gone cold and that the receptionist is gesturing for her attention. She stands up, her hand automatically straitening an invisible wrinkle on her dress before she approaches the counter again – leaving the coat and handbag on the chair.r] [Br]
    [Br] [Br]
The girl greets her with a grimace “I am afraid nothing comes up when I search your name.”
    [Br] [Br]
“Hmmm… that sounds strange.” Stina glances at the tiny Japanese-looking girl with her redhead companion who has emerged from the elevator and stopped near the chair holding her coat and handbag. “Have you tried searching “What kind of girl are you? I’m here to discuss a part in the campaign.”
    [Br] [Br]
The receptionists face turns into a smile of recognition. “What kind of girl are you? Of course! Why didn´t you say that from the beginning…”
    [Br] [Br]
Stinas surge of relief is cut short as the receptionists smile transforms into a rueful gesture “… but I´m afraid it was canceled weeks ago.”[Br] [Br]

    “Cancelled?!”[Br] [Br]

    “Yes, didn’t you receive a letter?”[Br] [Br]

    “No! I haven’t heard anything!”[Br] [Br]

“I’m really sorry about the inconvenience.”[Br] [Br]

“But…” Stinas brain feels as if it´s about to explode “…that can’t be right. I’ve just flown over from Europe to attend this meeting.”
    [Br] [Br]
The receptionist frowns. “Oh dear… didn´t you return the ticket as we requested in the letter?”[Br] [Br]

    “No, I didn’t… and I didn’t receive instructions to do so!”[Br] [Br]

“I am really sorry about that… but I will have to bill you for the price. Wasn’t it a first-class ticket?”[Br] [Br]

    “Yes… yes it was.”

The receptionists fingers move in a flurry on the keyboard. “A first-class ticket from Copenhagen via Heathrow… that´s 5998 dollars”

Stina is stunned, she can´t believe what is happening.

“Are you saying I owe the M&R Corporation 6000 dollars?”[Br] [Br]

“Oh no… not at all. The amount is only 5998… do you prefer to pay with cash or credit card?”
    [Br] [Br]
Stina is still struggling to catch up with the situation. “Ah… I don´t know… perhaps you´d better service this woman first.” Stina indicates the tiny Japanese woman who is now waiting in line behind her. “I could certainly use a moment to gather my thoughts.” She leaves the counter, and head for the lounging area where her coat still occupies one of the chairs. This is downright laughable. And stupid. All this travel for nothing.
    [Br] [Br]
Lifting the coat, she realizes that the handbag is gone. But it should be right there! On the chair! Under the coat![Br] [Br]

    “Oh no… no no…”[Br] [Br]

Everything was in that handbag! Her credit card, the driver´s license, key card to the hotel, the phone, she had even brought her passport to the interview!Br] [Br]

    “Oh my god…”[Br] [Br]

She finds herself on the edge of one of the chairs, without being able to remember sitting down. She will have to walk back to the hotel and get a spare key. They will probably ask her for legitimation, but she can´t show them anything. What if they won´t let her in? What about the consulate or the embassy? She has no idea where those might be and she doesn´t know anybody in the city.
    [Br] [Br]
She reaches for her coat without really knowing why. Then she notices the cup of coffee, still standing on the table. With her coat awkwardly tucked under one arm, she grabs a hold of the saucer and begins to rise but she is moving too swiftly! She fumbles for a moment and the cup falls from the saucer, splashing its remains onto her dress, before it shatters on the floor.[Br] [Br]

    “NO!”[Br] [Br]

The dress is soaked with cold coffee on the front. There is broken porcelain all around her. Then she hears a soft, soothing voice behind her.
    [Br] [Br]
“I don´t think this is one of your best days. Perhaps I can be of some assistance?”
    [Br] [Br]
It´s the woman who was standing behind her at the counter. There is an air of quiet confidence about her, which seems to embrace Stina like bliss.
“Thank you, Miss… I really think I could use a helping hand… or is it Mrs.?”

“It is Miss. Miss Elizabeth Akane Dean Naome. I am a Senior partner in the Corporation.”

I am pleased to meet you Miss Akane. My name is Stina.”

Akane chuckles “I know who you are Miss Stina. I loved your work in The Girl Next Door. Charming, elegant, lovely, intelligent, and beautiful. What more could a girl want to be?” She offers her hand and Stina is momentarily surprised by the firmness of her grip. She is not a very large woman, but she certainly has charisma – and strength too it seems. “It is an unexpected pleasure to meet you… I mean, with the campaign being cancelled and all…” She produces a napkin, seemingly out of nowhere, kneels and begin to clean up the mess on the floor. “… but it would be an honor if you will join me for lunch. There is a nice restaurant on the tenth floor and we can have your dress cleaned while we eat.”
    [Br] [Br]
“Ah… it is a very kind offer Miss Akane…” Stina spots a wastebasket nearby and hurries to fetch it before she too kneels to pick up the pieces of broken porcelain from the floor “… but it would hardly be appropriate for me to enter a restaurant wearing nothing but lingerie and attitude… I mean… what would people think?”
    [Br] [Br]
Akane stops in mid-action and scratches her head. Stina pauses as well while she politely awaits a reply. Long seconds pass. Akanes deep black eyes grows distant and her mind seems miles away. She is seriously considering the question. Suddenly her eyes snaps back into focus “I have no clue!” She giggles “If I could read people’s minds, I would be working in a circus!”
    [Br] [Br]
“I suppose that would be better than blackmailing them, but I don’t think…” The arrival of a stunningly beautiful French maid interrupts the rest of Stinas reply.
    [Br] [Br]
“Arigato gosaimas da” Akane bows her head slightly towards the maid who immediately performs a curtsy and begins to mop the floor. Stina is momentarily taken aback by the situation. The delightful rustling sound produced by the friction between the maid’s petticoat, dress and apron, sends shivers of excitement down her spine. It is exactly the kind of uniform she´s been thinking about buying for herself. “Oh Miss Stina, lingerie and attitude. What more does one need? But there is no reason to worry. You will be given other clothes while your dress is cleaned. It would be terrible if you caught a cold or something, hai?”
    [Br] [Br]
Stina blushes. She has been so absorbed by the sight of the maid that she hasn’t noticed Akane getting up from the floor. She quickly stands up herself, holding a piece of porcelain in each of her hands while she tries to pretend that the presence of a sexy French maid is a trivial occurrence.
    [Br] [Br]
“Please Miss Akane… it is just Stina if you don´t mind…” She giggles “New clothes, restaurants, maids… Be careful you don`t bring out the diva in me…”

    “…I might never leave again.”

”Stina it is then…” Akane is puzzled. It is obvious to her that the sight of the maid stunned Stina and she finds that quite interesting. The attractions of the mind are – in her experience – often an indication of a deeper need “… but you must call me Akane, okay?”
    [Br] [Br]
Stina nods “I’ll be glad to…”
    [Br] [Br]
“We have a dress shop here. You know the usual fashion stuff…” Akane smiles “… but tell me: If you could have any dress you wanted… how would it be?”
    [Br] [Br]
“What dress I would pick if I could choose freely?” Stina pretends being amused by the question to cover up the sting from the lie she is about to tell. She would – of course – pick the maid uniform but there is no need to share such a piece of personal information with a stranger. “Oh… you don’t want me to make those kinds of decisions, Akane. I have a terrible sense of fashion.” She gestures at her dress realizing she’s still holding the two pieces of porcelain “This is really just a costume to me… and I always get a lot of help from the stylists I work with.” She avoids eye contact with Akane as she drops the shards in the wastebasket “I would be quite satisfied with anything that isn’t soaked with coffee.”
    [Br] [Br]
Akane smiles “I am sure we can find someone to help you find something nice…” She moves towards the elevator a few yards away “… please come with me.” She pushes the button and the doors slides open.
    [Br] [Br]
Stina is just about to enter the elevator but stops on the threshold. “Oh wait… I am sorry… I forgot my coat… one moment please…” She returns to the chair to retrieve her coat and spends a few moments looking for her handbag without luck. She moves toward Akane and the open door again when she realizes that she hasn’t thanked the maid. She stops on the threshold once more. “One more thing…” She smiles apologetic to Akane “… just one… I promise.” She hurries back to the maid “I am really sorry about the mess I’ve made… thank you for helping us cleaning it up.” She returns to Akane feeling a little embarrassed about all her running back and forth. “There… that should be everything…”

    “Now I’m all yours.”

Akane can’t help smiling as Stina enters the elevator. Oh yes, you are. You can bet your panties on that! Persons exhibiting deluded pride are likely to trigger her rightfully feared bad moods – but Stina doesn’t seem to suffer from the inflated ego many other celebrities display on a regular basis. How many so-called stars would have gotten down on their hands and knees to clean up the mess they´ve made in a public setting? How many of them would have bothered thanking the maid for her service?
She is further intrigued by the fact that Stina seemed to deliberately avoid eye-contact with her whilst talking about the dress. Why did she feel the need to do that?

    The elevator door closes.

“Tenth floor, the Mall, please.” Akane bows to the security officer operating the elevator. “No, wait. Take us to the fifth.” She leans closer to Stina, whispering: “The cafeteria. I could really use some strawberry ice cream now… and you?”
    [Br] [Br]
The prospect of eating strawberry ice cream this time of day isn´t the least bit of appealing to Stina but she doesn’t want to insult her host, either. “That sounds wonderful… but…” Stina cringes. She finds it humiliating to ask Akane for help “… I have managed to lose my handbag. Do you think you could arrange for someone to take me to my hotel after we’re done? I need to contact my bank as soon as possible.”

“Certainly. I’ll see to it myself…”

    Akane smiles .

“… as soon as we’re done.”
